Mpegplayer needs a couple of refinements...
« on: March 29, 2009, 12:58:42 AM »
I have the Sansa e200 series.

First is a quirk with the play button vs the select button.
I have my microSD setup with folders. One called Music, and several Video folders.
I play an mp3 in my Music folder.
Shutoff the Sansa.
Turn it back on.
Navigate to my microSD\Music Video folder.
Scroll down to a video I want to play.
Hit the play button.
Strange it plays an mp3 instead.

I now realize what it is doing. The play button assumes you want to play an mp3 and jumps to your last played song or the one following it. Regardless of where you have navigated to in the file list.
The select button in the middle works as expected.

You get the same behavior if you exit a video by hitting the power button to go back to the file list. Then hit play and you are suddenly not in the video playing you are playing an mp3 instead.

It seems like the button is not retaining the resume playback after viewing part of a video. The resume playback works fine from the menu but not as expected from the play button with videos.

Second, is the auto play the next video from the file list needs to be added. To make matters worse the videos are played in landscape mode yet the file list is in portrait mode. I have the thing velcro'ed to my dash cover on my wife's side. She watches music videos I converted from Youtube. Every couple of minutes she has to reach up and rotate the wheel a click and hit select again. Then if she wants to switch to a different folder she has to unvelcro it, turn it 90 degrees to see the file list, select, start the video and velcro it back on the dash. On a long trip it gets pretty annoying.

I suppose this thread should be moved to the plugins/viewers area.

The video is played in a plugin not the main playback system while "Resume Playback" only resumes music playback. This isn't a bug, and as long as video is played in a plugin and not part of the main playlisting setup, this isn't going to change.

Thanks for the lightening response!

Then I vote to have the Mpegplayer abilities moved from being a seperate plugin and add it to the main playback system. The audio player is smart enough to use the appropriate code to play an mp3 vs wma etc. Add the code to switch to video mode for an mpg extension.

It's not nearly as simple as "switching to video mode." Plugins and codecs work separate ways. The mpegplayer plugin controls its own buffering and playback entirely. Someone would need to put in a lot of work to integrate video playback (in general) into the main playback system.
