Text to Speech?
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:07:01 PM »
Is TTS do-able?

Drop some text files into a directory and have the device read the text in real time?  This would be an amazing application.

I've seen a couple of posts discussing some particular TTS technologies, but it doesn't look like they went anywhere.

Anyone working on this?  Can the CPU drive this app in real time?

It might be.

Most of the previous discussions were probably around licensing issues rather than the technology. I believe we've solved those now, and could possibly reimplement espeak as part of rockbox without GPL issues now - but it's still a great deal of work.

Not currently

We don't know yet. Probably the Gigabeat could do this - as to other DAPS, well, it will be interesting to see!
