Is it possible, with any digital audio players, to record voice and listen to music simultaneously?

Furthermore, is it possible to turn a portable mp3 player into an effects unit?

Even better-- one that could load VST chains?

Today I've been experiencing the world with laptop in backpack, hooked up to (noise canceling) headphones and a (stereo) microphone, processing everything I hear with various effects through Ableton. It's the greatest, most amazing, most hilarious idea I've ever had. :o

I would love to be able to do this without carrying around cumbersome equipment.

Any suggestions?

I don't think there is any rockboxed DAP capable of doing this but you could get yourself a handy netbook, then the burden you'd have to bear would be smaller.
