How do you set a song's rating?

I'm working on a new WPS, and I'm choosing the WPS tags I'd like to use. I'm considering using the track rating tag "%rr", but I'm not sure if it's actually used at all...

It's been a while since I made my last WPS (2005-2006). Back then, Rockbox used a different Database, and I believe the rating tag changed as well (or at least the way runtime data is collected/stored). Anyway, how exactly does one rate songs now? Does this support only ratings which are set on the player, or does it support ratings set using PC software as well?

I want to know to be able to decide if I should use this tag or not.

I'm not sure about other players, but for the Sansa c200, there is a 'Set Song Rating' option.
