Thinking about trying rockbox on my iriver h10, but a few questions..

(1/2) > >>

camaross427:
1. Battery life on a iriver H10, what will it be like?
2. I heard it only supports mp3 files? is that true? because about half of mine are wma..
Also what other benefits are there to it? What things are worse about it?
overall is it worth using? thanks for your help!

1. Battery life should be good as long as your battery is in good shape, the stock battery may be a little old and not hold nearly the charge it used to. If you find your battery life seems ridiculously short, you may want to consider replacing the stock battery with a new one. Google will be your friend in that, should you need to.

So far as actual numbers, I get somewhere in the neighbourhood of 12-14 hours depending what I'm listening to, on a replacement 1750 mAh battery (my H10 is the 20GB model, by the way...)

2. Rockbox supports more than just mp3s, it supports Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, standard WMA (not WMA pro or lossless, last I checked anyway), and several other formats including some chiptune and VGM formats. There's a page on the Wiki somewhere that lists all the currently supported formats. (Page is here.)

I would say overall it is worth using, it does have improved battery life over the OF now since the improvements to the codecs, plus better power management in general... The added support for many more audio formats is also a huge plus. I can't think of anything worse than the OF about it aside from some of the proprietary features (such as SRS) and a slightly less appealing interface overall (the menus are rather plain in Rockbox, but the While Playing Screen is very customizable...)

Thanks so much! that cleared up a lot of my questions! I just want 10 hours out of it, enough to last me a long car trip, although the more the better!

now what else can i do with rockbox? how much space does it take up extra? i have seen a lot of customized theme's...are they easy to do? can you download them?

and if i decide that i don't like rockbox, how can i get rid of it?

Thanks

Rockbox takes up a couple MBs.  See the manual for themes, installing, etc.
