iPod Video 30GB 5.5g not charging in usb mode [SOLVED]

Been googling and search the forums but my ipod won't charge in usb mode. I've tried the onboard ports and an externally powered usb 2.0 hub.

I use my ipod basically as a usb drive which I mount in linux and use like any other directory. Amarok plays the files off the file system.

This problem seems to have occurred in the last few months. Or maybe my battery is just dying.

Interestingly enough I can leave it mounted and, if music is not playing, it can charge up. It only drains if music is playing. I assume this means it doesn't have enough power to charge if the drive is spinning up.

However, in my car I use a griffin itrip which plays music constantly and battery has never been a problem.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem since my last update of the rockbox firmware.
My version is r20285 - 090311

is it a bug ?

Ah, interesting to hear. That gives me some hope it's just a regression in the latest codebase.

Maybe I should try an official release. I've been going with the bleeding edge so far.

I reverted to the official 3.1 build using the installer utility. it's from somewhere in Dec 08.

In the same scenario where the battery would be quickly discharging (linux, usb mode, partition mounted, files playing through amarok), it doesn't seem to be discharging anymore.

Might be too early to tell but I'll leave it running and let you know.

That is because 3.1 uses Apple's disk mode, not Rockbox's.
It is fully expected to charge properly there.

I've been running current builds for a number of years so I guess the least we can say is that between 3.1 and the latest something got messed up.

I don't think you understood soap.  Hes saying that the apple firmware always charges the battery, since changing rockbox does not change the apple firmware.  So you should be able to charge in the apple firmware with the current build installed as well.

"The latest" current builds don't reboot into Apple firmware for disk mode, they use Rockbox's USB mode (notice the difference in connect screens?), and Rockbox is unable to charge your player properly.

This issue is known, is a large part of the reason why Rockbox's USB mode has been turned off in the pending 3.2 release, and is being actively discussed and worked on here.

It's a shame that you are disabling it in 3.2. Never had a problem charging mine up in the new USB mode and you find that when you disconnect from disk mode it spins up the drive more and uses more power. Is USB mode going to continue in the daily builds then?

In the SVN builds and daily archived builds, yes.

Why, though, do you choose to use the dailies instead of the SVN builds?

Where are the SVN builds? I have always clicked on "current build", unzipped then installed. Is there a different place to go for SVN builds?

"Current build" is the SVN build - but you said "Daily build" which is something else entirely. Please be careful about your terminology!

I didn't know the difference but then again the SVN gets updated sometimes three or for times a day. All good stuff though, Rockbox is excellent.
