rockbox won't play files
« on: March 17, 2009, 11:39:30 AM »
I have an album that I ripped to OGG format.  The files play perfectly well under Amarok and Rhythmbox, but when I have them copied onto my RockBox iPod and try to play them, the interface flashes each song title in sequence then stops, never playing one of them.  I thought it might have been a problem during the copy, so I tried a few other times but it still fails to work properly.  The database never loads it either.  Running disktidy doesn't help.   Any ideas?

Disktidy isn't intended to fix any problems. It just removes files like the "Recycle Bin" from windows.

What version of the vorbis encoder did you use to create these files, and what format are their tags in?

Hard to say right now as I am traveling.  I should think the encoder was the same as that for other, functioning files.  The intereface was grip, fwiw.  Would that make a difference between playing them on Amarok vs. RockBox?  I can try to re-rip the CD when I get home.

As an aside, the database seeing multiple copies of songs is also annoying.  Is there a way to examine/edit the database outside of RockBox?

Thank you,
Mike

Well, then checking for ID3 tags on the Ogg files would be a good idea.

It wouldn't be the first time Grip incorrectly adds ID3 tags to Ogg files... :)

Hmmm...  Pretty sure there are no ID3 tags, but I could be wrong.  In any event, the same exact files run just fine on my iAudio X5 RockBox (ver. r19569-081223--same as on the iPod).  Maybe I just need to reinstall RockBox on the iPod...

To answer the earlier question regarding the encoder, I don't recall, but it was probably the default Ogg Vorbis encoder, which I think is oggenc.  Once I can find the CD I will try to re-rip, but since the files work everywhere but the iPod, the problem has to lie there.

======EDIT======
(What's with this "no double-post" shite?)
I just used id3info on these files and they did indeed have ID3 tags.  I ran id3convert -s *ogg to strip them of their tags and re-copied to my iPod.  The songs play now(!)

Thanks for your hint!

Now, if I can just figure out the seemingly-random problem of the database storing the song names multiple times...

Multiple database entries is a known bug, but it seems to occur somewhat randomly.  See FS#8414.  The last poster in the bug report mentions the problem disappearing after enabling both "Directory Cache" and "Load Database to RAM."  If this also works for you then a note saying so on the bug report would be helpful.
