Gigabeat (F20) + RockBox (Voice with .talk file doesn't work)
« on: March 14, 2009, 02:59:15 PM »
Hi,

I am a programmer and I am using RockBox since few months. really like it but now I would like to use the Voice features.

I have made a C# Script that automatic read the file name and convert it to MP3 using Lame. I recorded everything with the same preference of the tool RockBox has (unfortunatly this tool doesn't work well with Vista 64 bits Utltimate but not the problem here). The problem is that even if I select to read the .talk in the RockBox menu, I cannot have the RockBox reading the file... nothing happen.

The .mp3 generated is working on the PC... and I have the exact file name. Example :

Code: [Select]
Baby Bash feat T-Pain- Cyclone.mp3 -> Baby Bash feat T-Pain- Cyclone.mp3.talk

This is the instruction I have read here : http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceHowto

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Does I have to set an other setting somewhere else?

I'm pretty sure that Rockbox uses speex as the voice codec unless you're on one of the earlier models (Archos Jukeboxes, or the Ondio).

EDIT: As you've got a Gigabeat (can't believe I failed to see that as it's the Subject of this post!) then you should be using .speex clips and not mp3. The easiest way would be to use voicebox+.zip from here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/VoiceHowto#Automated_generation_of_talk_cli

Yes, rockbox uses speex as the voiceformat for all newer players, then the old archos ones.
And its even not normal speex (i think the headers are removed), so you should use rbspeexenc to encode those clips.

So best would be to either use voicebox+ or rbutil to generate the files. (If you have problems on Vista with this Tools, make a Bugreport, or try to fix it yourself :-) )

It's fixed. You were right it should be encoded with speex.

Voice+ has too much problem. With Vista it require to have the UAC to be elevated (the html program). I did a fix in the registry and be able to do it but the options menu wasn't visible. Than, nothing converted. Lot of trouble. I did a .exe that do the samething and for 1 gig took 10 sec. ;)

Thx for your input guys. All work fine now :)
