./rockbox root folder?? (iPod Video 30gb)
« on: March 13, 2009, 02:29:51 PM »
Ok, so I just downloaded Rockbox to my iPod, and I must say it is pretty sweet. However, I decided that my own backdrop would be sweet, so I went to the tutorial thing at http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch12.html#x15-28900012.1.6 and it makes no sense. I might sound like a complete and dumb newb, but what is and how do you get to the ./rockbox folder? It says "If you want rockbox to remember your backdrop the next time you start your player the backdrop must be placed in the /.rockbox/backdrops directory." I can't figure where in the heck that is.

And not only that, I can't even locate my .bmp image when I go to Files on the main menu. I used The Gimp to save it as a 320x240 .bmp image, and saved it as 16 bit, as the page said to.

Am I overlooking something?

Thanks in advance.

.rockbox is a hidden folder - turn on view hidden folders in your file manager.

As for finding the bmp from the file browser, check what you have the Show Files setting set to.

I use Mac OSX, so there doesn't appear to be an option to show hidden folders, at least that I know of

Of course there is, it is just hidden somewhat - that'll be OS X making it "easy" for you.  Check out google for instructions.

Ok, sweet thanks. I'm guessing I just need to create a backdrop folder in there now?

EDIT: Oh, I found a backdrop folder in there

Second edit: Now I have the problem of not being able to find the image on my iPod. Its a .bmp 320x240 at 16 bits - is that a wrong size or anything?

Did the trick!! I get it now haha. Thanks man

EDIT: Ok, I got that all to work just fine, but now all my hidden folders are out in the open (a bunch being important file documents). Is there a way to undo this, or am I screwed? The tutorial I read said to type "sudo defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE" and relaunch finder, and then said to type "sudo defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE" to put it back. Its not working. Let me know if I should take this elsewhere.

That's all fine and dandy, but do you have anything for my last post?

Here's a link to an article:

http://www.brooksandrus.com/blog/2007/03/23/mac-os-x-show-hide-hidden-files-in-finder/

And here's a link to a widget:

yes, but it needs additional software..

So?  It is possible, and google tells you how.  Anyway, this isn't true - you can do it from the terminal.

It is however getting a little off topic now - getting OS X to work properly isn't too related to Rockbox.

true, what I meant to say is, that it's not possible from the gui. the user is not supposed to see hidden files. major bummer.
these issues are important when installing themes. maybe we should have a sticky about it...

Not a sticky, they don't work.  People don't read them anyway and they just clutter up the forum.

By all means add something to the wiki if you wish.
