Scaleable Video Playback.
« on: March 12, 2009, 06:30:42 AM »
Have it scale the video to fit the screen. I have 3 different players and it is a pain to have to convert all my videos to 3 different resolutions and keep all the microSD cards straight. I'd rather have 3 times the number of videos instead of 3 different versions.

I have a feeling that this would be far too CPU-intensive to be possible.  Video playback is less than realtime on some platforms (notably the iPod 5G) as it is.

None of the currently supported targets are fast enough.  Though its likely this feature will be implemented on some future targets.

Maybe I should just put them in c200 4:3 or 16:9 format and live with the border on my e200 model etc. Haven't tried that though. At least there would be fewer formats to futs around with.

Currently anything larger than the viewable area is cropped so that the upper left is all that is visable.

I am really picky about keeping the aspect ratio correct so square objects are actually square and not a rectangle. I hate going into a store and looking at wide screen TVs and seeing short and WWWWIIIIIDDDDDEEEEE talk-show hosts. lol

Unless this is done for technical reasons, maybe it should be centered, so the edges are chopped off even amounts on all sides.

As it is, the large majority of players with their stock firmwares rely on computer-side applications that convert everything down to the proper resolution and codecs for the player so it's minimally tasking on the processor and doesn't have to waste resources on converting and resizing on the fly.

I certainly wouldn't expect rockbox to accomplish much different. This is the prime reason why the documentation for mpegplayer calls for re-encoding your videos for the native resolution of the player.

Mpeg scale

It would be nice to have a plugin that would automatically scale your mpegs to the dimensions of the screen.
