Bug in AC3 playback in Rockbox 3.1, but not 3.0.1.
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:33:30 PM »
I'm trying to play an AC3 file on Rockbox on my H140, but it causes it to freeze.  I'm using Rockbox 3.1 for this.  I did some testing using the Rockbox simulator for the most recent 3.1 build (r20223, Mar 06, 2009), version 3.0.1, as well as the 3.1 release version.  Version 3.1 and the current build cause an error in the simulator, responding with:

"The application or DLL P:\Rockbox Simulator\simdisk\_temp_codec0.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

However, the version 3.0.1 build works just fine.

The AC3 file was ripped from a DVD as a single 290MB file using SmartRipper 2.41.  Other AC3 files from the same DVD compilation were ripped in the same manner and play perfectly on all Rockbox builds; only this file seems to cause problems.

To further experiment, I grabbed the simulator Rockbox 3.1 and 3.0.1 builds for the iPod 4G grayscale edition, and tried the AC3 file with them.  They behaved in the same manner for each respective Rockbox build.  So it appears this is a codec issue.

I can provide a copy of this AC3 file to developers if they want it.  It's 290MB however.

Thanks.

Theres only been 2 or 3 changes to AC3 since 3.0, so it should be pretty easy to narrow down:

The error message you're getting has nothing to do with the AC3 file being played. How are you trying different versions of the simulator?

I was extracting the build zips (the .rockbox) into the simdisk folder (or the archos folder of the 3.0.1 version) of the simulators.  The simulator at (http://rasher.dk/rockbox/simulator/) had no .rockbox folder included, so I just unzipped or copied the .rockbox folder to that.

After reading your message, I grabbed the 3.1 simulator + rockbox (http://rasher.dk/rockbox/simulator-3.1/) and with that one, the AC3 file works fine.

I must be doing something wrong right?  Is there a major incompatibility with using different .rockbox build folders with different simulator versions?

Yes, each .rockbox folder can only be used with the sim that its compiled for.

Rockbox builds are designed for the player. Simulator builds are designed for the PC. You can't use files from one with the other, and you need to make sure all files are from the same version.

So an H120 simulator needs to JUST use files from an H120 simulator. Not a build for the H120 player. All the files also need to be the same version (so if the simulator was compiled for 3.1, all the files need to be 3.1 files including the main simulator program).

Thanks for the info.  I guess I'll try experimenting on the actual player itself since it still does freeze up.

However, the version 3.0.1 build works just fine.
There was never a release 3.0.1 for any other players than the archos ones.
