Rockbox build to run direct on PC
« on: March 06, 2009, 08:49:42 AM »
I would love to see a version of Rockbox that runs directly on the PC.  I really like the Rockbox interface and I would like something simple like that to control my home stereo system that is connected to my PC.  Perhaps this is what the person who was talking about a Winamp type application was getting at.

This could be either done by a direct build native to PC or via an emulation of one of the current supported devices which is then loaded on the emulator.   I am looking for something bundled and ready to  go.  Don't want to have to be a code developer to do it.  I would prefer the first.  Any thoughts?
Thanks
Tom

Download a precompiled Rockbox simulator from here, or compile one from source.

And that's Rockbox on your PC.

Hmmmm, interesting idea. But those are all for Windows. I assume I'd have to compile myself if I want it to run on Linux. Or is that not easy/possible?

It's easy to build a sim for your OS. Simple follow the instructions on the LinuxSimpleGuideToCompiling wiki page. Just select to build a sim instead of a normal build, and your sim will compile and be ready to run.

Can I ask a question? Why do you want rockbox to run on the PC when a PC has about 100x the processing capabilities?

Easy. Testing & playing. Trying to figure out just what it can do. I don't always have my iPod handy, so with the emulator, I can play with all the features to try & get it to do what I like. :)

It doesn't actually emulate the hardware in the corresponding DAP, thus it's more correctly termed a simulator.  I find simulators very useful for doing theme-related work.

Oh, didn't know that. Thanks. It's still useful for my purposes, though...
