Charging only verifies that the wires that connect to V+ and ground are intact.  It doesn't necessarily tell you anything about whether or not the data lines are intact.  Try varying things one by one (different port, different cable, different computer, etc.).  You may also wish to boot Apple's diagnostic mode and run a check of the HD.

Do what Chronon said.  It sounds like your hard drive may have failed.

Diagnostic mode on the iPod is entered by rebooting (press and hold MENU+SELECT), and then immediately pressing and holding BACK+SELECT at the Apple logo. Your iPod's internal Diagnostic mode will start up; from here you can check your hard drive like Chronon suggested.

If your hard drive shows that it has problems, you can either consider replacing it, or just getting another iPod video.

I assume that FWPWR refers to firewire power.  I think to test this you need to plug in a firewire charger.  This shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.  You're saying that the HD check returned fine?

It doesn't sound like you tried a different cable yet.  Over the course of a couple of years I had two (maybe three) iPod cables go bad on me.  Make sure you exclude this as a possibility.

Rolling over the cable with an office chair can be enough to ruin it.  You will increase your chances of finding the problem if you exclude possible factors one by one, instead of making assumptions.

If you enter diagnostic mode on your iPod you should be able to manually run individual diagnostic tests.  The HD test is one of these.  If your iPod operates normally but simply won't connect via USB (either through the original firmware or the emergency disk mode) then this makes me suspect the cable.

But at the same time, this may also be a problem with the dock connector itself. If that's the case, that'll be a hard job to fix, short of swapping the logic board out for a new one.

Sure.  You can only go through and try to exclude factors one by one to try to isolate the problem.  There's no guarantee that any of the ideas here represent the correct answer.  An easy way to test the cable is to borrow a friend's iPod and see if it syncs properly with it.

Hmm... Honestly, I haven't had a working iPod in quite some time.  You could always google.

I did and found this: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
