question about recording with an 'ipod line-in adapter'

I've got a 120gb ipod classic, have been looking into getting line-in recording for it and have stumbled across one of these

they plug into the dock and give you a 3.5 mm line in port, the description says that you must have ipodlinux installed to use it

was just wondering if i would be able to use it with rockbox instead? or would i have to put linux on there, as i mainly want to use my ipod with rockbox and would prefer to just have one O/S on there if possible

No, you won't because you can't install Rockbox on the Classic.  http://www.rockbox.org mentions this.

This hardware would allow you to record on those iPods that Rockbox supports and for which line-in recording is enabled.

Nobody has been able to get 3rd party code to run on this model (this includes iPodLinux), as you can find out by searching around.

oh darn...
so if i had a compatible ipod, i could record using just rockbox software, no need to install linux also?
and is there any progress towards installing on a classic? suppose i should have checked into that before buying mine

That is correct.  Rockbox is independent from Linux. 

Any progress about this will be found in the topic in the New Ports forum.  Unfortunately, there hasn't been any activity for a long time and I'm not aware of any current attempts to circumvent the encryption.

Hey there Peteaus,
I know it's an old thread, but thought I'd ask you about where I might find the above adapter.  3.5mm line-in for an ipod?  I've made them before, but they're sort of a pain to do, and I like the fact that the one pictured above has no cord involved. 

Also, I'm guessing with 120gb you've got an ipod "video" (as per Rockbox) / aka : ipod "classic" as per apple.  I've got the same thing (with less gb) and record with Rockbox no problem.

The iPod Video (as called by Rockbox) is called the "iPod Fifth Generation" by Apple, not the "iPod Classic" (which we call either the Classic or Sixth Generation).

The first player from Apple to come naturally at 120GB was the Classic, not the Video, and doesn't have Rockbox on it yet.

Well, Apple's naming actually sucks a big one there...

It was released as the iPod Video 5~5.5th Gen, but it's a "classic iPod" under Apple's new naming scheme.

Any iPod that's not a Touch, Shuffle or Nano is a "classic iPod" now.

Hence the confusion when Rockbox doesn't support the 6th Gen released as "iPod Classic".
It's all a bloody confusing mess.

That's the thing: the idea that they're "named" classic is a myth (more or less perpetuated by a wikipedia editor or two who thinks that because Steve Jobs called them classic in a speech that's their designation).

They aren't named classic, he just called them classic (in the sense of a classic work of art) whereas Apple has officially named the sixth generation (and later) HD based iPods the "iPod Classic."

Apple makes it pretty clear where 5th generation ends and Classic begins on the page I linked, and doesn't call anything older than 6th generation by the term "classic" either as an adjective or proper noun at all on that page.

Since it's Apples' own page defining the generations, it's more or less the most definitive source you can get on the matter.
