Utility running in background

Hi!
First of all: I'm a newbie with Rockbox.
I'm using Ubuntu for programing (Windows XP is also available).

I installed Rockbox on my IPOD mini, everything  did well, and now I want to start my Project.
The idea:
A program running permanently in the background (start automaticaly after booting, some kind of autostart) for deleting specials files on an special userdefined date.

I'm not sure how to start this idea, I'm familiar with:

C++
Perl
JAVA

As far as I know is C the supported speach, I had a short look at it and I'm sure that this is no problem on the base of C++, just a few syntax-things.

Could you give me some ideas how to start or at least which articles to read.
