Newer bootloader for H320
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:00:36 AM »
Hi, my iRiver is still working great, and it is encouraging to see that RockBox project is alive too!

H320 model's bootloader files were not updated on wiki for almost 3 years now. I know in SVN there is newer code with some fixes, but it was never compiled to .bin file publicly.
I wonder if somebody can help me getting up-to-date build of the bootloader?
I found one newer build mentioned in wikipage about flash-drives (r16446M-080228) but this one halts every other time I reboot, so I have to press reset button.
It is kind of too much to install and customize Cygwin and SVN just to build one time the bootloader, don't you think? Also, there may be some tricks I have to learn to do it. Why don't somebody who has it already (maybe even built) just share? Please.

Hi,

as far as i know this issue is still present in the current SVN bootloader for the H300. So it is likely that you'll experience the same crashes with a newer bootloader.

The problem isn't easy to fix because it doesn't happen on all H300s and also bootloader development for the H300 is quite risky because a broken bootloader can "brick" the player requiring special hardware to recover it.

Mostly, I am satisfied with v5, but one thing is really very inconvenient - Car Adapter mode - when ignition is turning on, bootloader loads the original firmware.
It is ironic, since when you need it, original firmware is usually quite hard to load.
Everytime I forget to turn the player on before I turn the car on I have to disconnect the power, turn the player off, turn it on, plug in the power.
I know it was intentionally done to prevent some other bug, but I thought maybe it was addressed in current SVN version.

I'm using an updated, home-built bootloader.  It fixes the following issues for me:
- USB bootloader mode now works (it never does with v5)
- Bootup from the non-LCD remote works
- With patch FS#7814, the RTC alarm works
(I've not tried car adapter mode.)

HOWEVER!

Some people report that the SVN bootloader doesn't allow them to access the hard disk(somewhat fundamental).  This doesn't appear to be related to the model of disk involved, but something to do with the hardware nonetheless.

In this situation you can (in theory) still hold REC to boot the OF and reflash v5 (I believe, though I've not tried it myself).

I have no clue what's causing this problem (can't experiment as my H300 works fine), but it is rumoured that LinusN has isolated the particular SVN revision that triggers it.  He's a busy man though, so don't expect any quick fix.

If I get time, and if you're interested, I'll put my bootloader build up somewhere, but it is very much at your own risk.
