Installation help please?

Hi,

I am trying to install rockbox onto a c240 version 1

I have unzipped the files from the download.

Do I;

a) start the player by locking it and holding down the record key?
b) just plug in as normal?

then do I;
a) copy over the .rockbox folder(and contents) into the directory?
b) the contents of the rockbox folder into the directory?

then do I;

a) unplug it and wait?
b) run the bootloader from windows?

Does the boot loader work on Windows vista?

I am assuming that rockbox is probably a great piece of software but the instructions are a little confusing. Do I have to read all 165 pages to understand this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Just read the manual, or use Rockbox Utility (which is linked to in the manual).

Installation is the second chapter after a short introductory chapter.  You can worry about the rest of the manual later if you like.

You don't have to read the whole PDF.. Just go through the installation manual in the Second Chapter as Chronon said. Go for the Manual Installation.
Regarding Bootloader, yes it works on Vista. I use Vista Ultimate and it works for me. If you still have doubts, you can ask here..

Why not just try and use Rockbox Utility? It's intended to make the installation process easy, so at least trying it seems to be in place.

Besides, you can't run the bootloader on windows -- it's software that runs on your player.

I think josephcs meant Sansapatcher, in which case only *installs* the bootloader.

Yes.. I meant the Sansa Patcher that Installs the Bootloader on to the player.. Its because wallydd called it "bootloader". I didn't want to confuse him ..

When attempting not to confuse people, it's still better to use the correct term and explain to them the difference rather than spreading incorrect terms. Doing the latter just creates much more confusion later.

Yes.. I meant the Sansa Patcher (a dos application)

Sansapatcher is not a DOS application. It's a command line program, and we have versions for Mac OS X and Linux as well, which are run from the Terminal in each OS. It is not a bootloader; it merely patches the Sansa bootloader and installs (or uninstalls) our bootloader.
