Help! Data abort and now Sansa e260 won't turn off...
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:32:23 AM »
I rockbox'd my sans e260 yesterday and all seemed to be fine until today when I tried to load a video and play it.  The video showed up in the play list, but when I tried to play it, I got the message "Data abort at 00000004 (0)" and now the player won't shut off at all.

Update --

I left it alone for about 15 minutes and came back and was able to shut it down.  When I started it back up and tried to view the video again, it went to a black screen.  It took a while, but I was finally able to get the player to turn off.

I tried connecting it to the computer again, but it takes a while to get the PC to recognize it.  When I turn on the e260, it goes to the SanDisk black screen, then to RockBox, then to Sansa's blue menu screens.  If I connect the USB, it shows connected, then switches to disconnected.  When unplugged from the PC, it does a system restart and goes back to SanDisk black, then RockBox.

I was finally able to get the computer to recognize the player after several tries and have unloaded and am trying to reload the video back on the player.  It shows that it has transferred, but "writing" stays on the screen.  I'm going to walk away again and see if the "writing" message goes away before trying to play the video again.

Am I just really doing something wrong here or is rockbox just not for me?  I was *so* looking forward to loading a video in one file and being able to bookmark where I left off!

It kind of sounds like you might have file system corruption.  Try running a chkdsk (or similar) to try to repair errors.

1. Any time the Sansa appears frozen, holding the "power" button for a few seconds should turn it off.  You can then turn it on with the power button as usual.
2. The "writing" message on the Sansa doesn't always tell the truth.  Just "safely remove" the Sansa, and you can then unplug it, even if it still says "writing".
3. As Chronon said, you may have filesystem corruption.  If it's not that, ensure that the video file plays back on your computer (i.e. it isn't the file that's at fault).

@ karnor...

get 'WinFF' ( http://winff.org/html/ ) as that will convert your video files so that they work 'properly' in Rockbox and it's easy to use to ;)

in the application...

Convert to... Rockbox
Device Preset... RB Sandisk Sansa e200 4:3 (fullscreen) (or the 16:9 one, which is widescreen)
Output Folder... whatever you want it to be ;)

also in the Options i would probably recommend checking the '2 pass' option since it goes over the encoding twice to improve overall encoding quality at the expense that it takes twice as long to encode the files.

then just drag and drop or 'add' in your files and click convert and once it's done the files will play fine on your e200 series player.

the application is pretty easy to use and straight forward.

p.s. i just started messing with video playback on Rockbox in the last day or two and that application works wonders for getting just about any video file you got to work and work well in Rockbox.

Thanks, all for your help.  I lost internet service all the rest of the day yesterday so was unable to respond.  In the meantime, I finally got it working and it's been fine.

Thanks for the suggestion on the 2 pass for encoding.
