(slacker) Has anybody seen the inerds of this?
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:16:21 AM »
Just saw this on sellout.woot:
http://sellout.woot.com/Default.aspx?WootSaleId=7947&ts=1233924395&sig=abd3d8d7f888264f

Has anybody ever seen the inside of one of these and know what HW lurks there?  Looks like it might be a target for a port, the 2g versions can be had on ebay for about $60.   There is also a second generation version with the controls relocated (that might have different HW as well).  4GB and 8GB versions too in both series.  I'm tempted to look into this if the platform is suitable. If this post sparks someone else's interest that ok too.

(PS yes, I've read the guide lines on new ports)

And then you post this here? I don't think it's the right place.

But the hardware looks awsome.

These folks have a pretty detailed teardown of a 2GB G1.

I've got an 8gb G1.  It's got a huge, great-looking screen, and the touchstrip would actually be great with the right firmware support.  However, it looks like the memory is soldered to the board which would hinder expandability.  Also, any firmware modifications might make it difficult to use actual Slacker content on the thing, which is really where it gets its value.

And on a humorous note, it would be nice to see rockbox on it so you could:

  • Listen to mp3s in album order.  Currently the unit only sorts mp3s by <Track Name> alphabetically only, which Slacker has described as 'intended functionality'.
  • Remember the backlight brightness setting between power cycles.
  • Not have your backlight set to a near-random brightness level if you happen to touch a button while the screen is dimming.  Seriously.
  • Have the option to just turn the goddamn thing off instead of putting it into a battery-draining 'sleep mode'
  • Have a 'Shuffle Library' feature that actually works instead of freezing up the player.

I love their overall concept but man, I've never seen a buggier firmware implementation.  Here's hoping to them getting bought out by someone with deep enough pockets to hire some competent developers/product managers.
