Album Art, "different issue"
« on: February 05, 2009, 07:29:12 PM »
So I did totally read over the wiki (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/AlbumArt), but despite my efforts I am not getting art to display. Here is my current setup: 5th Gen iPod Video 60 GB, got Rockbox installed, worked like a charm, and am loving it so far. I then added the theme AAFreak, because... I am an Album Art Freak ;). Now to get album art to work here is my example. I added a FLAC folder (Boxer by The National). I then found a .bmp of the cover of Boxer and re sized it to 240x240 naming it Boxer.bmp. I added Boxer.bmp into the folder "The National - Boxer," which from what I could tell from the wiki is all I needed to do. Obviously I am missing something technical that I don't quite understand. If anyone could give me some pointers I would REALLY appreciate it. Sorry for this "simple minded" problem, but hopefully once I get this down I will be able to fully love my new Rockbox iPod. Thanks!

Is the song file properly tagged with an album name in its metadata that is exactly "Boxer" so that it exactly matches Boxer.bmp (and why not simply use 'cover.bmp'?)

I was under the impression that the cover.bmp had to match the name of the album exactly? Honestly I am more used to dealing with mp3s if I used something like foobar2k would that let me check the metadata to see if it is Boxer? But if it is "Boxer" and I have "Boxer.bmp" in the folder "The National - Boxer" should everything work?

It can either be named "cover.bmp" or "AlbumName.bmp" where AlbumName is exactly what it is in the tag, yes. Foobar2k would be one way to check, but Rockbox should also be able to show you what's in the tag with the "Properties" action in the context menu.

Thanks. Ummm Checking the track context it does Say [Album] Boxer. I also resaved the image as "cover.bmp" it is just sitting in the folder, does it need to be in a subfolder or something? I can see the image when I click the folder on the iPod, but it doesn't display when the songs are playing.

I then found a .bmp of the cover of Boxer
If this is just some random file you found, you should make sure it is actually a BMP file, and that it's not corrupted - open it and save it as BMP using your favourite raster graphics editor.

All the valid filenames and locations are listed on the wiki: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/AlbumArt#Where_To_Put_The_Images

Yeah, I've read that wiki, but as I said something about it must be over my head. I have now tried 4 different .bmp for this album so I do not think that is the issue. Is ALL I have to do find the .bmp name it cover.bmp and then place it in the same folder as the flac album I want the art to apply to? I really feel like I am missing something here, because it still is not showing up, I even tried reinstalling Rockbox.

That's odd that it doesn't work.  Here's a step-by-step of how I do it:

1. Find the album cover in Google images, usually a .jpg image.
2. "Save As" the image directly onto my iPod, in the folder with the album's MP3s, OGG files, what have you.
3. Fire up The Gimp (or Photoshop, if you like) and open the cover image I just saved.
4. Re-size, adjust levels, etc.
5. "Save As" again in Photoshop/Gimp, and make sure Photoshop's pulldown menu says .bmp or that you type the .bmp extension in The Gimp--that way you know it's a .bmp file.  I name my cover art "cover.bmp" and just save it right back in the music folder with the corresponding album.
6. Fire up Rockbox and play the file, just to see if it worked.

That should do it, unless your image editor of choice is being evil.  Step 2 sounds weird, but my iPod is my library, and I back it up on occasion so I know my "backup" is up to date.

My directory tree in Rockbox (Artist/Album/Tracks) would look something like:

- Spinning Jennies
   - Stratosphere (2002)
       * 01-So Far So Good.ogg
       * 02-Forget My Name.ogg

          blah blah blah....rest of the album...

       * 12-40 Miles (French Version).ogg
       * cover.bmp

If only the music shows up, try using "Show Files" in the quick menu and enable "Supported" files.  If Supported or All files is chosen and your cover art doesn't show up when you browse the files, then your .bmp is getting lost somewhere.

Serenity,

I don't know what it was you said, but following that somehow worked. I hadn't tried GIMP and that seemed to do it. THANK YOU!
