harddrive upgrade

<< < (3/3)

Zardoz:
Would it be possible to upgrade the ipod 80GB with standard toshiba drive to a 1.8" SATA 128GB SSD (for a million bucks)?? I was looking at making a DIY converter, like here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=356421, although i guess it might not fit. Any thoughts?

barbes:
I had Rockbox running on my iMod w/240gb drive using the build in this thread (again, thanks rmaniac) for several weeks, and it worked beautifully. Then it started to go sour - intermittent failure of the clickwheel and buttons, sometimes they worked and sometimes not, slow response to commands, screen going blank while music still played. Rebooting and hard booting sometimes helped, sometimes not. All symptoms got worse as time went on. When I rebooted into the Apple firmware the same symptoms appeared. I uninstalled all the Rockbox firmware and all symptoms disappeared (it was hard to get into disk mode to do this, it wasn't responding, though I finally got there). Original firmware now running fine.

I'd prefer to run Rockbox, though. Any ideas?

Llorean:
It sounds like intermittent hardware failure. Best guess is that it was just chance that uninstalling Rockbox had nothing to do with it clearing up, coincidence or possibly your attempts to get it into disk mode wiggled something back into place at least temporarily.
