adrimaxi:
Dear all,
I would like to buy an ipod video and upgrade it with a 120GB or 240GB hdd. There prior to do it I would like to know how it works.
I saw that you can buy the hdd ther http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/ipod-hard-drives.html
But then how the hdd is formatted and is RB would see the properly partition if more than 136GB?
Thanks,
Adrimaxi

I moved your post, as it's more of a hardware related question than an installation issue.

Have you searched the forums to see if anyone else has attempted to use a hard drive larger than 136GB in an iPod video? If not, you may be the first.

Some users have managed to get a 120GB drive into their players and have both the OF and Rockbox report the capacity in full. 240GB drives, on the other hand, are still quite new and expensive, so you may not find as many results for it. If you're willing to try it out and tell us about it, go for the 240GB drive. iTunes should be able to format the drive and set up the OF; if not, then you have your results (and maybe a nice 240GB drive to use for data storage instead).

iTunes on Windows will format the drive as FAT32 for you, which is what Rockbox expects. So if you buy any new hard drive, just pop it in, perform a restore in iTunes, then grab the manual and read it to install Rockbox.

Hmmmm.....  they do show the 240GB as working with the iPod in iPod mode.  A special Rockbox build for greater than 137GB is still needed, correct?

I have picked up one of these 240gb drives for the ipod 5.5G and installed it. After setting rockbox to use LBA48 and a sector size of 4096 it works great so far (I just got the drive today). If anyone needs information on what to change in the source or just a precompiled bootloader and rockbox setup I can post that somewhere. I will post if I have any issues, I am copying about 200gb of .ogg files over to it right now. The drive boots the apple OS and rock box, both show 223GB or something on them.

Unless you need the full 240GB of space then I do have a spare iPod video that's already got the 120GB drive inside it for sale.

PM me for pictures/pricing if you're interested.
