SOLVED: Can't save voice recordings
« on: February 04, 2009, 11:29:55 PM »
I must be missing something ... I can't get my e200 to save a voice recording. I've read the instructions three times, and all it says is hit the power button to stop recording. When I do that, the recording isn't saved. There's nothing in the instructions that how to save the file. I've set up the recording directory through the context menu, but no voice recordings go there. I'm stumped. Please help. I love the idea of having an mp3 voice recorder built in.

Can't save recordings in Sansa e2XX
« Reply #1 on: February 05, 2009, 05:48:07 PM »
I posted this in the General forum, but see there's a Recording forum, plus I have more info to add.
When attempting a voice recording, I can't seem to save it anywhere. I'm assuming saving is automatic, as the instructions show no way to save the files, but when I view the folder that I designated through the context menu as the recording folder, no files are there. What am I doing wrong?

The other weird thing is, when I go do designate the save recordings folder, I'm unable to do so on my Micro SD card. The option is not available for the card, but I've read on this forum others who tout that as a big advantage for using Rockbox -- the ability to record onto the external card. Please help.

By the way, I'm using the first e260 v1.

Thanks.

What steps are you taking to record?  What do you do once you get to the While Recording Screen?

First off, I was finally able to designate my Micro SD card as the directory for voice recordings.
The step I take to record are, from the main menu, select Recording. This brings up the level meter window with volume and gain settings.
Getting it to start recording is kind of hit-and-miss. I hit the play button, and sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it starts recording. I hit it twice in a row, and sometimes it will start recording, sometimes not. Sometimes I just have to keep hitting it until it starts.
Once I'm recording, I can hit the play button again to pause, then hit it again to resume recording.
Once I'm done recording, I don't know what to do to save it. I've tried hitting every button and nothing seems to do the trick. I've tried hitting the power button, but that resets the recording window to start a new file. Same for the menu button. Right and left buttons seem to have no effect.

Have you checked the manual to see what each button does whilst in the recording screen?

Yes. As I stated originally, the instructions do not explain a way to save the recording, so I'm assuming it's supposed to be automatic. Unclear. But nothing I do generates a saved file. So I don't know what to do.

You stop (not pause) the recording.  That saves it.  Looking at the manual, it seems power is stop recording, and I can confirm this on my e200, yet this seems not to work on yours?  Could you verify?

If you feel the manual to be unclear, we always welcome patches to make it more clear.  Ideally against the latex source code, but plain text would suffice.

I have tried the power button, both when the recording is in pause mode and when the recording is active. Neither seem to save the recording to my designated place ... or anywhere for that matter.

Rockbox automatically assigns a filename (based on the starting time) when I press the Record button on the While Recording Screen.  What happens for you?

Yes, when I hit the play button to start recording, a file name is automatically generated. I can see it on the While Recording Screen. The problem is when I stop recording, that recording is not saved anywhere.

Strange.  Is Rockbox saving it to a location other than where you think?  Mine are saved properly.

Do you have enough free disk space?

Well, no matter wherever I designate my "Set As Recording Directory" through the context menu, it doesn't save there. I've tried my 2GB Micro SD card, which is empty, so there should be no problem with space there. And I've tried the Record / Voice directory on my main unit. There should be enough empty space there too. But when I check those directories, nothing is there.

UPDATE: I just checked something. I went to my card's directory location, went to the context menu and selected properties. Here's the readout:
Subdir: 0
Files: 12
Size 2975 KB

So this tells me they are there, they are just not visible to me. Any idea on how to fix this?

ANOTHER UPDATE: I went into Database, and did a Search for .mp3, and whatta you know ... they show up at the top of the list. I'm able to play them back and everything. However, this is very inconvenient, and I know there should be a way to go into the File menu and access them from there, they just are visible there. So, again, and ideas? Thanks.

LAST UPDATE: I went into the Context menu for Database, hit Update Now, and voila! They all show up. I have now turned on Auto Update, so hopefully I won't have this problem again.

Thanks for all your help on this problem. I'm very happy now, and extremely happy with Rockbox! Love it.

Have you considered simply having your computer find all *.mp3 files on the device, then scrolling down the list until you find your recordings and using that to figure out where it's putting them?

Though at this point you should be able to just play one you do know where is, than check it's location in its properties.
