Yet another question on compiling and what not....
« on: February 02, 2009, 10:38:29 PM »
As you may have guessed I am fairly new to compiling and programming( I know Ti-84, learning python, and java). I am trying to learn how to compile so i can get the wikiveiwer working on my ipod (5.5G 30GB), (or maybe somebody could just compile a build for me,  :P.

I kind of sorta understand the general idea ??? of compiling i just have one question. What do they mean by the build envirnment in the "simple Guide to compiling". I noticed that its not mentioned anywhere else in the guide and it where i am kind of getting stumpted. Somebody please point me in the right direction!

It refers to any of the three possible build environments listed (as well as some that are not listed).  Click one of those links to find out more.

As for whats actually needed, its a suite of software including a unix shell, a c compiler, perl interpreter, make, patch, etc.

ohh... ok that makes alot more sense, I will try to do my first (ever) compiling tonight. Thanks for that input....

*feels like he has an IQ just below room temperature*

EDIT: I started to download the the latest cygwin devolpers envirnment, and i added the rock box mirror site (http://download.rockbox.org/cygwin/) and choose direct connection( i later tried the IE5 settings) and it will then start the download, but then it says unable to get setup.ini.sig from http://download.rockbox.org/cygwin/. I choose all of the "standard" settings.

Does anybody know then if the mirror site got moved or if i need a different mirror, or is there a direct download (like in a .zip or .7z) so i can finally compile my rockbox wiki-ified... lol

Read the very next line immediately below where it tells you about the Rockbox mirror.  Tell you what, I'll even quote it here, and make it bold and purple to be extra clear:

Quote
Start the Setup program again. When the installer prompts you for a mirror site URL, enter http://download.rockbox.org/cygwin/ in the "User URL" field and click "Add".

In case you encounter an error regarding missing .sig file, supply the -X (--no-verify) command-line flag when using Cygwin's setup.exe. This can be added into the command-line invocation in a Windows shortcut, for convenience.
