Synchronizing with iTunes.
« on: February 02, 2009, 08:17:26 PM »
I bought a cheap Sansa c200 and am trying to sort out how to rockbox it in the meantime.

I used to have a Fuze and I would sync it with WMP and all was good but it got stolen. Anyhow there is no RB for fuze anyway.

The idea is to make a playlist limited by size, sorted by rating. I select all the songs and drag them into the player. I'm also hoping this doesnt move sync album art, thus saving space.

Now, say I own a 2GB player, I would need to substract the space taken by the .rockbox folder, about 22 MB.... But I know I need to leave some "wiggle room" for, say the database and such. Any recommendations on how much is enough?

I am not even considering making playlists for the moment..  I guess that would just complicate everything.

BONUS QUESTION: How would I go about it if I have an SD card for the player?

P.S. I read the manual and the FAQ couln't quite find an answer. This is my very fisrt post. thanx!

If you want to save space you should also make sure the metadata tags don't contain album art.

If you use a syncing application then the details of what gets transferred to your player and how it's organized when it gets there are specific to that program and not really a concern for Rockbox.  Rockbox will allow you to browse any files stored on the internal memory or in a micro SD(HC) card.  Alternatively, you can browse a database sorted by various attributes (like artist, album, etc.) without regard to where they are located.

The SD card can be loaded with any files you like.  The original firmware can only read microSD cards (not microSDHC) so larger cards are most easily filled using a card reader.

Here's one tool for Windows that may be useful for you (found on our UsefulTools wiki page): http://www.amok.am/en/freeware/amok_playlist_copy/

note: I think you will have trouble trying to use iTunes to sync to any device other than an iPod.

OK this is what I did, totally depends on one's preferences but I bet you can figure it out.

First I created two smart playlists of the stuff I want in the player, Both in one folder named "Sansa" so I don't forget. Both playlists are limited in size, and they add up to 1.75 Gb, my player is a 2Gb, leaving some wiggle room for Rockbox.

First playlist is limited to 0.875 Gb and is made of Any song rated over 2 or that is unrated, sorted by added date. This gives me the most recent songs, exept for the ones I dont really like that much.

The other one has the same data limit and is sorted by rating, giving me all the five star songs and if there's room some fours or even threes. I only wish I could shuffle this one as it only brings up the same list of songs. Maybe a list limited by size AND rating in random order? I'm afraid this would bring up too many four star songs....  ah the dilemma!

Anyway, I just drag that folder into an empty folder in the player and all the songs are copied. Pretty neat huh?

Any comments on this? Suggestions?
