Version information
« on: January 27, 2009, 07:54:13 AM »
I've recently updated (I think!) and want to confirm that my player is running version 3.1

The player provides the release/build information (r19569-081223), but not the release version.

I can see that the current daily build is a little later @ 19858, and the daily build page shows these numbers, however, the "releases" page doesn't show the version number.

Is there a simple way to confirm what I've got, correlating the build numbers and release version?

I think the release version should show that, rather than (or in addition to) a specific build number.  Either way, you are running a build from four days ago, so more recent that 3.1.  This is absolutely fine, and nothing to worry about :)

I see "3.1" mentioned at least twice on that page.

Each download link contains it too ... ;)

Thanks for that.  I figured as much, but it would be nice if the player had some way of confirming it.  I'm not sure if you're "should" infers "it would be nice if" or rather "the release version does".

You are correct, I should've been clearer.  The releases page doesn't show the build number which release 3.1 corresponds to.

Again, my bad.  I can tell that I've downloaded version 3.1, according to the web site text and URL's however, there's no way of confirming, from my player, which version I'm running.  Is there a page which contains the number 3.1, and the number r19569-whatever?

Imagine I meet someone else running Rockbox on their device, we compare features, and the conversation goes something like this:

"Hey, have you got version 3.1 yet?"
"Not sure, lemme have a look ...
System, version, hmm nope, hang on, system, Rockbox info, err nope.  Ummm, I don't know".

It's not the end of the world, but I was really looking for confirmation that my install went OK, and that I could check out some new features.

3.1 doesn't correspond exactly to a revision because it's branched from the main build, and fixes are sometimes applied to the 'release' that are workarounds and not really things we want permanently in the development branch. Conversely, for a period development still goes on while the release branch remains the same to be shaken down for bugs.

Including a version number wouldn't really mean "check out this SVN revision and you'll have 3.1" or even "if you see this version number you have 3.1" because it would be possible to build from the main SVN Rockbox sources and get the same revision as the 3.1 revision.

In the case of 3.0, there were very significant differences between the branch for the release and the development branch.
