No USB Connection on 2009-01-25 Builds
« on: January 25, 2009, 02:59:05 PM »
The Current Build page invites feedback on the daily builds, but does not say where one should make a report.

Two of today's builds 19849 and 19856 will not connect the USB on my iPod 5g 60gb when I plug it into the computer.  Went back to Stable 3.1 release and problem solved.

Hope this is useful information.

There's only one daily build each day (hence the name 'daily'). Please, don't call "current builds" daily builds. They're two separate things.

But reports on the latest current build belong in the bug tracker (notice the link 'bugs' on every page of the site).

Thanks for the corrections, but you assume too much about users like me.  I don't know the differences between daily, current--or where to report problems, unless there is a specific instruction about them.  But I did download both of the builds noted above on the same day CET.

I see that there are now several other entries in this forum describing the problem, so I am not alone in experiencing it.  Please excuse me if I reported it in the wrong place or have used the wrong terms.  I like Rockbox and just wanted to help.  At the time it did not appear anyone else had reported the problem.

just a side note...

@ chuck... i would recommend just sticking with the stable builds all the time unless there's a specific issue you have that a recent (non-stable) build has fixed for you.

because typically speaking 'so far' each release (v3.0 to v3.1) has been exactly 3 months apart. (Sep23rd2008 - Dec23rd 2008) so at that rate the next one will be due around March 23rd 2009.

just some thoughts ;)

Well, I don't personally think it's "assuming too much" that people can A) read, and B) use the terms they read.

It says "Daily" or "Current" on the download pages for each, or in the program you're using if you're using the Rockbox utility.

I also don't think it's expecting too much for someone to read the forum guidelines, since it says you MUST do this in capital, colored letters during the registration process, and the guidelines DO tell you where to report bugs.

I was trying to be relatively polite about it, but I wasn't assuming anything beyond the fact that you were a being that could read English and hadn't lied during the registration process.

Actually, I am an English teacher by profession, but that does not mean I have a full understanding of either technical or legal terms (which I don't).  However, I think I have learned here to take ThaCrip's advice, and then just leave being helpful to others more savvy than me.  I'm definitely not looking to be reamed out for simply trying to point out some trouble I had.

If someone said "press the green button" and meant "press the blue button" but couldn't be bothered to say the right word, confusion occurs.

If you say "I downloaded the daily build" but meant "I downloaded the current build" and couldn't be bothered, other confusion occurs. Here there was enough information in context to realize you were being lazy and not using the terms that you were given, but elsewhere that information may not be available.

It's not a question of being "savvy" enough. The terms were right there in front of you, you just couldn't be bothered to actually read them apparently, or if you did didn't bother to think it might be worth your time to use our own terms for things so we knew what you were talking about clearly. So yes, now you're getting "reamed out" as it were, but had you simply said "Oh, I didn't realize there was a difference, sorry" then it would've ended there. Honestly, is it really so hard to take a few minutes and pay attention to what you're doing?

My initial post was a simple "please use the right term, and here's where they belong." You even admitted you didn't know where they belonged. There was no "reaming" in it, and the tone was even polite (for example, I used 'please'). You chose to get defensive.
