Need simplified version for nursing home patients and elderly.
« on: January 24, 2009, 06:02:03 PM »
I have had a lot of fun lately getting older players donated and then loading them with songs of the 30's to 50's and taking these to nursing homes and VA hospitals.  Even patients with dementia seem to come back to life when they hear the voices of such greats as Don Cornell etc.  I wish I didn't have to work for a living I would do this full time.

Older people have a great deal of difficulty with players when they come with FM radios and recorders.  They seem to always have a problem getting into this mode by mistake.  They need a Rockbox version that is very simple to use.  Help me start a nationwide effort to get older players donated to older people.

It's more that it's very hard to understand what you're actually asking. The statement "Help me start a nationwide effor to get older players donated to older people" is very vague, and not really what gets done here.

Meanwhile the topic of your post is on a completely different subject, but you don't ask any questions about doing that.

It'd be much simpler to help you if you asked specific, clear questions.

And nationwide means where?  UK?  France?  Germany?  Brazil?  US?  Canada? ....

I am i the US.  If this is not the proper forum let me know where to post.  I am taking these to WW II vets.  Come on guys be serious and help me.  My Dad is one of those vets.   I think we are going to get some local (US) press about our efforts.

I need an operating system that you literally turn on it starts playing music for these older patients.  Some have the minds of toddlers.  Those patients who have the capacity want to play their favorites but most can't...  They just let it run and click through the songs they don't like.  They still derive great enjoyment from the old songs.  We need a volume limiter too so they don't turn it up too high.  We need to set the volume level when we give them the player and make it so they are not able to change it for some people.  Most patients can handle the volume fine.

Rockbox is ideal for the patients as all players we give out could use the same operating system lessening the stress on volunteers and nurses who have to help with these things.

If you set the startup screen to resume it will start playing from where you left it on turning off.  You could use precut to limit volume.  However, if you want to remove button actions so that they can't click on something and get away from the music I guess you will want to dig into the code.

All of this is achievable, to do it nicely you will want to tweak the code a bit.  Start at www.rockbox.org/wiki/SimpleGuideToCompiling

Incidentally, I was being serious.  I had no idea what "nationwide" meant, and your initial posts didn't say at all what you were trying to achieve.

You might also want to check out Party Mode (see Chapter  of the Rockbox Manual) as you may find it useful for your purposes.

You can set Rockbox to use specific settings (including volume) on start-up by creating a fixed.cfg file.  See Chapter 12 of the Manual.  As BigBambi already mentioned, you can also set Rockbox to resume playback on startup.  And you can you can set a playlist to repeat (also in Chapter 7).

While there is no volume limit in Rockbox, you can set the equalizer pre-cut to -12 dB which provides some limitation on the maximum volume.

Thanks so much for your help.  I have a neighbor kid working on this now.  I am being called by some national new outlets about my work doing this.
