Apple firmware gen 4 60 gb photo
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:37:52 PM »
I have an ipod photo 60 gb and have been using rockbox for a little less than a year. Recently, the apple firmware stopped working. Because of this, it cannot mount or go into disk mode. I've tried pressing menu+select, and play+select. When i click play+select, it just restarts again. Is there any way I can still mount my ipod?

You don't make it clear whether it enters the Disk Mode and immediately restarts or if it just reboots without any indication of Disk Mode.  Can you boot Rockbox?  Do the buttons still work?

If the emergency Disk Mode really cannot be accessed, then there's no method for establishing a USB connection any longer and it would appear that you have suffered some sort of hardware failure.

It doesn't enter the disk mode at all. It just restarts. I can boot into rockbox, and the buttons still work.

Does it look like I have to get a new ipod?

That may very well be the case.  Can you enter the iPod's diagnostic mode?  This is also stored in flash.

Yes, I can enter the diagnostic mode. I tried to enter disk mode through the diagnostic mode, but it has the same effect; no response and an apple logo, until it just restarts.

It's quite odd for the emergency disk mode and the Apple firmware to "conspire" to stop working at the same time.   :-\

The only course of action I can see would be to take the drive out of the player and mount it in a USB enclosure to try to load a fresh Apple firmware onto it manually.  It is possible that if you do this you can boot the Apple firmware and use USB again.  However, this doesn't really address the issue of how your player got like this in the first place.
