Gigabeat S Install help...
« on: January 23, 2009, 06:42:15 AM »

Hi, Im a complete noob but would really like to run Rockbox. Im just confused on how to install it...

I believe Ive upgraded to the latest (modified) firmware but now it talks about puting files in certain folders etc and i think its talking about using a certain program to send stuff etc...

If someone could post a simple installation with links to stuff needed. That would be great.

Thanks!

p.s congrats on the develpment!

Please be aware that the S is not quite yet supported.

I assume you are following these:

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatSInstallation

What in particular is giving you problems?  You are going to need to be specific.

The documentation isn't 100% completed yet, either - I've done this install myself and it does take a little troubleshooting to get it working properly.   For example, I couldn't get the single-boot bootloader working (it would work once, then go back into recover mode once I rebooted).  I even compiled my own bootloader, to no avail.  I gave up and just used the dual-boot bootloader, instead.

More info on tools you might need:

That's nothing to do with the documentation, that is a problem somewhere else, and is an example of why the S is not yet supported.   That being said, no the documentation is not yet complete, as the S is not yet supported (spot the theme!).

Did you use the merged nk.bin file?   The merged file is larger, around 12.4MB in size.

Lapoot, I didn't have to do that step, but I believe it means the device node for the second partition (the large storage partition), which "fdisk -l" as root will tell you - something like "/dev/sdc2".

The mkdosfs step is only if you get a "file not found" error, as I recall.   If you're continuously going into recovery mode, I think it's a different problem.

The Gigabeat S is not supported yet, please don't attempt to install or come to our support channels with installation questions until we've added it to the officially supported list. Installation and use may be buggier than reasonably expected.
