This just shows you have seen an inconsistency between the size of a playlist generated by information in the database and the total number of music files in your player's file system as listed by stats.
The total number of files as listed by stats looks very similar to the estimate you gave earlier of the number of mp3's on your player. What are all of the non-music files that stat found? Are some of your files not being recognized as valid media by Rockbox?

If I'm not mistaken, the stats plugin should also find all files in hidden folders if you set Show Files to "All". I had guessed that this inconsistency might be due to the SanDisk firmware hiding the MUSIC folder. Now, it looks like stats and the database agree about the number of media files present on your player. You haven't provided any independent confirmation of the actual number of media files on your player at the moment. Why do you expect there to be more than 1600 media files on your player?

Have you emptied the Recycle Bin on your Sansa? The excess files may still be lingering there.
