Archos Jukebox Recorder: change USB-Mode after hw-mod
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:33:12 AM »
Because i often use my Archos as a external harddrive, i wanted to make it USB-powered for not having to bring along the power-supply all the time. So what i did is i wired the battery-poles to the respective USB-power-poles inside the device. This works very well for connecting it to a computer without seperate power-supply, but when i use it with batteries just to listen to music, it always powers up in the USB-Mode!

A software-patch changing the USB-Mode i.e. button (a) for USB-mode and button (b) for music-mode would be fantastic...

Unfortunately i'm not very keen on compiling patches or modifying any code  :-[

Could someone help me please?

Thank you very much!

I think the more elegant solution is to use diodes in your hardware hack so the USB powers the battery but the battery doesn't power the USB.

For a software solution look at the HAVE_USB_POWER define and usb_power_button in firmware/usb.c.

I agree with soap.  Feeding power from the batteries into USB might waste power and cause problems with some USB ports.  I wonder if the forward voltage drop of a diode would be too much however.  If that is a problem, try a Schottky barrier diode.

Thank you for your replies!
I think when i use the device either by batteries in music-mode, or in usb-mode connected to the computer, the problem can be solved with a diode.

But sometimes i would also just like to power the device via usb (without batteries at all) and still use it in the music-mode. So to be able to switch from music-mode to usb mode while connected to usb would be nice... do you think it is possible to assign the different modes to a button or a button-combination?

Can i make this software-patch myself with a very basic programming knowledge or do you think not? If it's not all too difficult (but too difficult for me ;)), could someone write a patch and provide it in the patches-section? I think other Archos-Jukebox users would appreciate the feature as well...

Thank you for your suggestions...
