Sansa E200 - Playback Problems..
« on: January 17, 2009, 05:34:23 PM »
First off, I would just like to say that life before Rockbox was not as good. That said, I am hoping the errors I am about to describe can be fixed, as I would prefer to not go back to Sansa's firmware, as while it worked, it was nowhere near the potential that Rockbox offers.

I am running Rockbox 3.1, Version R19569-081223

First Error:

When playing the 1st Track on several albums, it plays for 20 secs or less, then the screen goes black, and the following error message appears at the top:

"Data Abort at 00009080"

The tracks and albums it does this on are as follows:

Britney Spears - 'Circus' - Track 1 - "Womanizer"
Gary Numan - 'Dawn' (AKA 'Sacrifice') - Track 1 - "Pray"
Elastica - 'Self-Titled' - Track 1 - "Line-Up"
'Mixed 'n' Mashed' (self-made compilation) - Track 1 - Christina Aguilera vs. Britney Spears - "Dirrrty Slave 4 U"

Second Error:

When I play the first tracks from these two different albums, both play as if stuttering. Only does it on the first track.

Albums affected:

The Mars Volta - 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' - Track 1 - "Son et Lumiere"
My Chemical Romance - 'Three Cheers For Revenge' - Track 1 - "Helene"

If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if need more info than what I provided, let me know, and I see if I can help. Thank you again..

All of the files are in MP3 format.

If you have a file that fails in precisely the same way and at the same place, every time I wouldn't mind looking at it.  Can you upload such a file somewhere?

Next time just send me one file, not a whole album.  Which of these am I supposed to look at, and at what time point can I expect it to fail?

Sorry.. It's not the whole album. I zipped the five songs that were causing Rockbox to crash. It usually occurs within the first 20 secs on all of them.

I listened to a few minutes worth and didn't have any problems.  Can you give me a specific, reproducible point where one of them fails?

Also, the reason I asked you if you had "a file that fails in precisely the same way and at the same place, every time" was because I hate listening to other people music looking for glitches that I can't find . . .

I understand entirely - and nor would I want to have to suffer through someone else's music, either. :(

Okay, here's what I was able to come up with..

I played the Britney Spears track (it could be worse - it could be far worse.  ::) ), and each time (I tried it 4 times, one right after the other, following a reboot), it would give me the "Data Abort.." error at exactly 12 seconds into the song.

Does that info help any?

I couldn't reproduce it with the current build.  You could try updating to see if that helps, but nothing has changed in the Mp3 decoder recently, and the fact that one of your files is a WMA suggests that its not a codec bug.

I'd guess hardware problems with your sansa.  Try checking the disk for errors.

Data aborts in that range could mean it is a buffering bug. I get these too from time to time when resuming playback, but they're usually not easy to reproduce (and a seek or a skip during buffering can be enough to avoid it). The setup has to be exactly right for it to happen, including stuff like if album art or the dircache is enabled or not.

Ah so the order and location of the files could matter?  I guess a simple test would be to copy one of the files to a folder by itself and try playing it (thats what I did) and see if it works that way.

Here's the latest update..

I noticed the Bitrate was variable on the Spears' track list, with the majority of them being of lower kbps. I went ahead and tried to d/l a better, higher end version, and it seemed to work, as the album plays through with no errors or crashes.

The Gary Numan track, "Pray", was ripped from the actual CD which I own. I also noted that one had been ripped at 128 kbps. I dl Audiograbber and re-ripped it, which a higher bitrate, and that album now plays perfectly on there.

Only one I can't get to play is the 01 - "Dirrty Slave 4 U", the Christina Aguilera-Britney Spears mash-up by DJ Tom. That one crashes both with, as well as without, the cover art. I just deleted, because at this point, it's not worth stressing, as everything else now plays.

If either of you can figure out what was causing it to crash, great, but either way, everything, for the most part, seems to be okay now.

Not so much location, but the order of files, and the exact timing of different events in the buffering thread. So you'll need at least two files for problems to happen.

Is this documented in a flyspray task somewhere? It seems like if it's a problem devs occasionally have, some documentation in the tracker would be helpful so we can point people somewhere when they report it here in the forums...
