ATA Error 11 on F40

I have a F40 running build r19569-081223 and the latest bootloader

If the Gigabeat is connected via USB to a PC ( XP SP3 or Ubuntu 8.10)  and then turned on while connected via USB  and then disconnected, ATA Error : 11 is displayed.
If the Gigabeat is turned on and then connected and disconnected, no error occurs.

This is puzzling me, as it has only recently started.
