iPod Nano 1G Firmware issues.
« on: January 07, 2009, 09:24:29 PM »
Hi, I just received this iPod from a friend, as he assumed it was broken.  I went home and plugged it into my mac, and it charged up until it got past the "very low battery" screen. It then stopped charging, so I plugged it into my iPod Stereo.  This charged the whole thing up.  I went to then plug it into my mac, and still couldn't mount it.  So I reset the iPod and came to the rockbox bootloader.  I'm not too familiar with rockbox, but how do I remove rockbox completely?

P.S., I also have another box running ubuntu 8.10, if any software needs to be run on linux.  Thanks!

There are instructions in the manual.

Alright, but I haven't been able to get the iPod to mount in either OS X 10.5 or Ubuntu 8.10.

I tried manually putting it in disk mode, but that isn't working either.

What do you mean when you say disk mode "isn't working"?

I mean I restart it, hold down select and play/pause, get into disk mode, plug it in, and it says "Okay to disconect."  It won't mount on OS X or Ubuntu.

I also tried mounting it in disk mode when it was plugged in already. Still no avail.

Try to exclude possible factors like bad cable, bad port, etc.  You might try on another PC.

Can you dual boot into the Apple firmware?

Yes, what happens if you boot into the Apple firmware and then connect to USB?

If I boot into the apple firmware, it charges for a moment, then just sits at the main menu.  It will not mount.

It doesn't show up on the desktop, under "Computer" on Ubuntu, or under disk utility on OS X.

Have you excluded the possibility of a bad cable?  Apparently you can get into both USB modes but it won't connect.  Does lsusb ever show any clues as to the iPod's presence?
