Toshiba S?
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:35:25 AM »
Ok, I'm confused.  I was surprised to see yesterday that you wonderull people made a port for the Toshiba Gigabeat S, to find today that once again, it's none existent.  Can you confirm whats going on here?

Thank you.

the port is working, but things like easy installation, the manual, and other important stuff arn't done yet so while its working, its not easily avilable for users

Interesting, some I'm guessing that by easing installation, you mean the rockbox utility?

I'm also curios, I know there is no way to know when a device will be saported, but I heard that the zune, and the Gigabeat S are very similar devices.  So I'm curios if there is any drive for developers to port a zune version?   (I'm not asking for a port, I'm just curios about whats going on 'behind the scenes').

i dont think any devs own a zune, even if they did.. the firmware is encrypted or something so the zune is a no go anyway

IIRC the zune firmware is not encrypted but signed, as is the firmware on the Gigabeat S but the loader on the gigabeat has a bug which can be exploited to load unsigned code, this bug is supposedly fixed on the zune. The source for the mknkboot tool is probably the cllosest thing there is to documentation about how it works.

Otherwise you are correct, they are very similar hardware wise so if someone would get around this signing a port would be able to use much from the gigabeat S
