Working with the Dictionary plugin (was: sanse e250)
« on: January 05, 2009, 09:13:20 PM »
i really like rockbox i just can't figure out how to do half the stuff. but that is for another time.

right now my problem is the application "dict" i am assuming this is dictionary? any way when i open it it takes me to the keyboard. i type in a word and the screen goes black and message pops up that says "failed to open index" and then "plugin returned error". do i need to install an index on it?

p.s. in the manual it talks about "viewers" what are these? they don't show up under plugins.

Check the RockboxDictionary wiki page for more information about Dict. It does need an index.

As for viewers, the manual should also say what they are, and that they're not supposed to show up under plugins (including why they don't need to).

quoting from the fine manual, which is really explicit on this case:

Quote
Viewers are plugins which are associated with specific file extensions. They cannot be run directly but are started by “playing” the associated file. Viewers are stored in the /.rockbox/rocks/viewers/ directory.

I suggest reading the manual -- this is the first paragraph in the viewers section.

I changed the subject name to something more descriptive. itan95, for future reference, please use a more descriptive subject name when starting a new thread.

What is "it" exactly?  You should be able to put any file you like on your Sansa in MSC mode since it just appears as a UMS (USB Mass Storage) device.

I will mention that the archive that you downloaded contains tools to help you create your own dictionary index.  You can also download already prepared dictionary resources from the bottom of the page.

i don't understand how to use the dict plugin properly either.
Copying the two files already mentioned dict.desc and dict.index into the apps directory works fine. However this leaves me being able to use an english-english dictionary only. What do i have to do if i want to incorporate say the german de-en.txt translation file posted on the wiki into the plugin? and what about other languages?

EDIT: I just found out about the "new Dict Plugin" on flyspray, made a custom build and now i can simply use different dictionaries found on various sources found on the Stardict Sourceforge Project Website. When is this plugin going to be accepted into the svn? i am not encountering any bugs, it's easy to use and now synced. So why is this only available on the patchtracker?

As with many patches that aren't accepted yet: The person(s) maintaining this patch hasn't done much beyond posting it to the patch tracker and updating it there.

Once someone who is willing to do further work on the patch thinks it may be good enough, they should post to the -dev mailing list that they'd like to try to get it committed (and possibly come to IRC and say the same thing when many core devs are around).

Then they'll need to fix up any problems / objections the devs have and more or less do any cleanup that is deemed necessary. Basically, getting it accepted is the un-fun part. Doing what other people require of you, rather than doing what you want.

If only i were more capable of c-programming i'd do what you ask for.
To the OP: I have precompiled a version containing the new dict plugin for you. now simply go to the stardict page and download whatever language suits you (tar.bz2 archive). Extract the archive into a folder named "dicts" which must be in the root of your player. now all that is left to do is to unpack the dict.dz so it becomes a .dict file (winrar is capable of reading .dz but gives an error, using the vmware environment you can execute the "$ gunzip -S .dz *.dict.dz" command. this worked for me. pm me if you cannot succeed in unpacking them yourself.)

5. Copy dict.desc and dict.index to ./rockbox/rocks/apps on the player.
