Chronon:
It sounds like you installed the Rockbox bootloader and not the firmware itself.  If it can't find rockbox.ipod the bootloader will tell you to enter Disk Mode to fix it.  Evidently, you didn't do either 2a or 2b correctly. 

EDIT: There are uninstall directions in the manual.  Now that you are in Apple's firmware you can plug it into USB and follow the directions in the manual.

Section 2.6 has uninstall instructions.

will restoring my ipod and deleting all the rockbox files get rid of it?
