Sticky Topic "About 6 Gen Ipods, 120GB Ipods, and Ipod Classics"

This question seems to show up at least twice a week and it certainly seems greatly to annoy our long suffering moderators.  ;)

They are quite right that this question has been asked and answered to death, and that new forum users should do a cursory search for this information.

But since this question has been answered in a number of places on the Rockbox site, perhaps in the interest of peace you might consider making the excellent response SOAP posted a sticky topic at the top of the General Discussion list?

Just a thought. Thanks as always to the moderators and developers for your good work!

Thanks for your consideration.   ;)

I know there's a general opposition to sticky bloat on these forums.  But maybe a small reminder in the Apple Installation forum sticky could help remind some of these users (also of non-1st generation Nanos) to check the front page for whether or not their player is supported.

The problem is, people who don't search generally also don't read the stickies. If they read the stickies, they'd know to search first. I don't see how this will make any significant reduction in the amount of times it gets asked.

I'm forced to agree with Llorean.

When I originally posted the "My ipod installation has gone wrong" sticky in the Apple installation forum, it was for the same reason - the same questions came up over and over, and we answered them over and over. I managed to argue Llorean into making that post a sticky, but it didn't really help. People STILL didn't read it, and just asked the same questions.

I personally think the less stickies you have, the more likely people are to read them. As soon as you get 3 or so, people start seeing that there's several and don't think they're as important.

Many message boards just collect "interesting" posts as stickies, I think instead having the stickies more or less just be the "required" reading where possible (as in, posts every user of that forum should read) helps those who do read them the most (by not wasting their time having many stickies they don't want/need to read).

I'm agreeing with the Admins on this one.  I don't post often (probably because I use the search option), but I myself will ignore stickies if it doesn't look like they pertain to my current, very specific question.

Unless you sticky a topic which reads in bold caps: "NO, YOUR IPOD IS NOT SUPPORTED", nobody will look.  In fact, even then they'll probably assume they're the exception to the rule.  I work in customer service, and hear often, "I know your policy is this, but...."

Your best bet is to ignore the posts and encourage other casual users like me to run interference.  Or is that just a different can of worms?

Along the lines of what Serenity posted, how about the sticky subject that says "6 Gen Ipods, 120GB Ipods, and Ipod Classics are NOT SUPPORTED" or "No currently manufactured Ipods are supported" with SOAP's message on the click through.

Like I said, just a thought. Sorry to belabor this issue. Please feel free to lock the thread.

Having that message on the frontpage doesn't seem to do anything, I don't see why having a sticky would be any different.

Not to mention that the very first sentence of the installation chapter of the iPod manual says, "Note: Rockbox presently runs only on the 5th and 5.5th generation Ipod videos. Rockbox does not run on the newer, 6th/Classic generation Ipod."

The problem is that people don't do any research before asking questions, not that the information isn't plastered all over the place.  Maybe we should have a sticky that says "PLEASE READ THE STICKIES".  After a while it just becomes ridiculous.

While I definitely sympathize with the moderators, I have to agree with the 'No Sticky' crowd.

Folks too impatient to search for an answer, will likely post their question 'sticky' or 'no sticky'.

'Stickey bloat' will make the impatient even less likely to look at the 'stickeys' -- so the whole thing becomes self defeating.  For the majority of forum members, 'stickies' are a continual annoyance.

MysticRiver has too many 'stickies' and other sites I frequent have full pages of them.  It's really irritating to have to scroll a whole page just to get to the recent posts.

The Rockbox site is very 'clean' and that reflects the hard work that everyone does.  It would be a shame to pollute that with 'sticky bloat'.

P.S. Rockbox 3.0 running strong on 8 machines -- Congrats, as always!!

first of all thanks a lot for all the work that has been dedicated to this project.

With all repect I would like to make a suggestion for a Sticky,
