Folders on iHP140 - no files visible inside
« on: January 05, 2009, 09:10:57 AM »
Hi all,

My iHP140 just stopped displaying the files inside folders using Rockbox. The same thing seems to be happening under the iRiver load as well.

I suspected a dead or dying hd but I've successfully backed up all my files and data to an external HD connected to my Mac so the files at least are ok.

Have just updated to the current build for the iRiver but the behaviour is still there. i.e., I can't play any of my files or see any of them even.

Now I've just tried to initialise a database on it thinking that might be the problem but I've got an error message:

PANIC
Stkov tagcache

I've pressed the reset button and it seems to be ok but still there's no way to play my files.

Apologies if anyone has listed this particular problem before but I couldn't find it on the forum.

Any ideas? I don't want to lose my trusty iHP.

I would run a disk check on the H140 (chkdsk from Windows, fsck.vfat from linux).

Well, sorry first of all for posting in the wrong place and secondly...

I've solved it! Had to change the files view to 'all' even though I didn't change it in the first place. All my files are now visible and I'm up to date!

So sorry for posting without a thorough hunt first!

Have you tried running a disk utility to check your file system for errors?  If you're using Windows, for example, go to the start menu, select "Run ...", type "cmd" and hit enter, and then type "chkdsk x: /r" (where "x:" is the drive letter assigned to your player).

(After typing that, I noticed that you referenced a Mac in your post.   I'm not really familiar with Macs, but I'm sure that they have a disk utility.)

Actually I've now changed the file view back to 'supported' and it looks just like it did in the good old days.

Oddly, I tried everything on my mac first (now on a vista machine) including trying to download and unzip the rockbox build on my mac. I'm convinced I've done this before but now, i can't seem to unzip the 1.9Mb file on my mac. Using a virtual pc on my mac I can, but there seems to be a mac .zip problem with the build. Very odd!

But thankfully I'm completely sorted.

On a mac  btw you can use Disk Utility to check, repair etc disks.

Thanks again for the help.

I remember from prior threads here that Mac's native unzip utility chokes on the .rockbox directory because of the period at the beginning of the directory name.  I've seen recommendations to use a different unzip utility (maybe something called Onyx?).  The Rockbox Utility should also work.

Not really chokes per se, but because of the . at the beginning of the folder name (which causes the file/folder to be hidden under Unix and Linux), you won't see it appear in the Finder. You would have to enable hidden file view to see it. There's a Widget for that purpose that you can find by searching around on Apple's site for "desktop widgets" and "show hidden files".

I would recommend StuffIt, for using archive files.

Well the funny thing was that I did use Stuffit and it expanded the .zip file with it showing temporarily on my desktop (as all unzipped files appear) but then disappeared almost as suddenly. I wonder now if it's the business of the . preceeding the name.

But the good news is that it was a simple issue and now solved.

Thanks to everyone for their input.  :)
