Sansa e200 rotate screen
« on: January 01, 2009, 04:16:13 AM »
I'm looking for a way to rotate the screen on my Sansa e200 90 degrees, essentially making it 220x176.  I know there are rockbox players out there with screens of that layout, so I was wondering if there was a way I could build rockbox on my player to flip the screen to that layout.

The reason I ask is that I have a hardware modification I plan on doing to my sansa, but I don't want to set the screen to landscape if I can't get a display to match it.

There's not currently a way to do that.  In principle it's possible.  There was an old patch for the Gigabeats that provided screen rotation by using a modified bootloader to select two different firmwares.  It was rejected for the reasons that you can read here: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6688

Okay, I looked at the link but I'm unclear on what exactly that was about.  I'm seeing it as something to give you an option to boot at the rotated screen or not and that's why whatever it was was rejected.  I am not looking to have both views available, but rather only use a build in landscape.

from the sounds of it, its something that hasn't been implemented and there aren't currently any patches that would do it for me and it wouldn't be something an amateur could just implement, so I guess I'll be stuck with it in portrait.  Oh well.

thank you for the response.

From the project's standpoint that patch was rejected for not pursuing screen rotation in a nice way.  I simply referenced that as an example of a previous effort that shows proof of principle.  The short answer is that there's not a current patch that does what you want, though it's possible, in principle.

if you look under settings, general settings, display, LCD Settings at the bottom of the menu  is the option to turn the screen upside down.  I don't know any thing about  the programing but how hard would it be to make it rotate 90 degrees instead of 180?
Just an idea to think about. I have a griffin I Tripp for sansa in the car and some times
turn it upside down because it is comfortable to have the data cable at the top than the bottom. ;D

Upside down is easier because things like the pixel/memory mapping stay the same as does the aspect ratio - on some LCDs I believe it is even more simple as the display itself does the flip - it's just a register setting.
