Odd h10 problem
« on: December 30, 2008, 11:35:59 AM »
So I havent used the custom Rockbox interface for a while but something odd is going on when I start the player. It makes a clicking noise and tells me to recover it. Well I would do that but when I connect the player to the PC it wont show up as a drive even in Emergency Connection. Anyone know what's going on with it?

That sounds very much like the hard drive's gone and died on you...

If you have a 20GB H10 you might try finding an external 1.8" ZIF-connector hard drive enclosure for it and seeing if that might bring the drive up long enough to extract the data from it, but I wouldn't count on it...

Again assuming you have a 20GB model, you'll more than likely want (if not need) to replace the hard drive if you intend to keep using your H10. There's a handy guide here of what drives are (probably still) available, as long as you find one that matches the dimensions of your old drive (it's 5mm thick, length and width shouldn't be too high a concern) and uses a ZIF connector you should be set. (If you go through this section and look for a drive model that's 5mm thick and uses a ZIF 40 connector you'll be fine.)

If you have a 5GB or 6GB model, you may be able to replace the drive if you can find a 1" microdrive that will fit in it.

Dang that sucks... Well I have the songs backed up onto a few dvds so at least I'm not screwed there. It is the 20 gig version but I don't think I'll be messing around with a harddrive and what not. Thanks a lot for the help.

I myself would suggest seeing if one of the devs would like it as a donation to the project. The H10 is a stable target but it doesn't hurt to have more developers with it...

Just an idea...

Not just developers, but staff as well.
