Gigabeat F40 to SSD

(1/1)

vexecuter:
Hello there,

There has been no activity on http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=13832.0 for nearly a year, so I thought I would ask about user's experiences at sticking a SSD drive in the F series.

I am wanting to put in a 64gb SSD drive (something like this: http://www.evilgaming.co.uk/product.php/ocz_core_series_sata_ii_2.5_inch_ssd_32gb) into my Gigabeat F40. I have seen on the last post that there were troubles with spindown times, and that a CF card was used and not a SSD 'hard disk' as such.

What SSD drives would work, would a ZIF to ATA converter be needed and what modifications to the rockbox source would be required to get it working?

Cheers.

evilnick:
Well, for a start if that drive is the 2.5" form factor then you wouldn't be able to fit it in the F's casing as it'd be far too big.

faichiu:
2.5" won't fit
you need 1.8" ATA

I think you will find anything with "SSD" in the name is marketed for gee-whiz-cool PC usage, or high performance.  Neither of which are needed for your DAP.
A CompactFlash adapter and CF card should be a much cheaper solution with enough performance for your needs.

I've been testing out a Lexar 133x 8GB CF, using the Dealextreme adapter, on my F20.  No issues, assuming a recent bootloader and recent build.   Slightly faster than using a HDD (since there's no spinup), and full screen 4:3 video isn't showing any dropouts.  Adorama Camera had a recent free after rebate CF deal (I'm not kidding), so this was too good a deal to pass up.   SSD's seem to be overkill, given the price.

I don't know if battery life is longer yet, but I would expect that it should be.
