Multiple duplicate tracks in E260R with 2GB microSD
« on: December 22, 2008, 08:17:39 PM »
My wife and I both have an E260R. A month ago I installed Rockbox 3.0 on my player and I am happy so far. I primarily wanted a better shuffle algorithm than however, she has a 2GB microSD chip. On it are about 5 CD's (which I had loaded via standard Rhapsody program). Once RB starts you have to select Database from the main menu and  it says" Database not ready" and below it you can select  "Initialize now". When confirming this, it starts building the database. (This is not mentioned in the Installation Instructions; I will submit Edits to add this, if indeed this is not related to my problem).  You see a number increasing. When it reached 829 (which is the total tracks on the player incl the SD) the rate of increase started to accelerate enormously. And kept going and going. When it got to 8000 I stopped the process by powering down. Reboot and RB said "comitting". When done I looked at the database and everything looked OK (artists, albums, genres), except for the "tracks" directory. It had many duplicates (5 to 8!) for most tracks. I then went to Playlists on main menu and selected Create Playlist. It went up to 70 and stopped (this is exactly the # of tracks on the SD). While I was staring at the screen, it suddenly turned into multicolored  noise and froze. Hold down the power button for 10s or so and reboot. I tried a "initialize now" and stopped the datbase building before it reached the 829. It then does not have any duplicates. There is more to tell. I reinstalled RB 3 times once without SD chip, but no different behaviour that I could see.
I am still trouble shooting, but want to submit my problem now to see if anyone has some advice for me.

There's already a topic about duplicate entries in the database here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=19637.0

Your problem seems a bit more involved, though.  Is the freezing reproducible?  If you can reproduce this then you should file a bug report so it gets the attention of the developers.  Please provide a "recipe" for reproducing the bug (e.g. how exactly you prepared the playlist).

Thanks for yr reponse.
I had searched the forums and had seen the one you mentioned:

However mine seems totally different:
- it does not happen randomly. it happens as a result of the database builder running amok.
- "initialize now" does not solve it, not even temporarily.
I will report more on the freeze and other peculiarities I may find, but it will take some time.

Yes, it does seem different.  I know that some metadata can cause problems with database building (though not like this, in my experience).  Will it build properly with a subset of the files?
