Does Rockbox make a Sansa e200 sound "better"?
« on: December 16, 2008, 07:17:29 PM »
I dont know exactly how to ask this question, so please bare with me.

Does Roxkbox replace the machine's (in my case a Sansa e200) digital to analog conversion "codec" (or whatever it is called) with a more "high end" audiophile "codec".

Reason for asking:

I have read (on head-fi.org mostly) that people dont seem to like the sound of the Sansa e200 series (V1 only), but seem to rave about the Sansa Fuse SQ.  (Of course the Fuse can not currently be Rockboxed).

I recently built a 24 GB Sansa e280, and I am pretty happy with it, and just bought my first true "high end" IEM (Westone 3 - I have not yet received it).

So I am wondering if I am using the right player, or do I need to replace my player with a more "audiophile" player.

Another way of asking the same question:

Does Rockbox provide a better Sound Quality than the default software, not because of better EQ or whatever, but because the acutal sound output is higher quality because of the rockbox software.

Thanks.

Rockbox cannot replace the hardware inside the player (which is the "Digital to Analog converter" or "DAC"). Because of this, its ability to improve sound quality is limited on devices, such as the e200v1, where there are noticeable hardware flaws.

like what? , does it actually effect real world sound quality to the point it's noticeable vs the v2?

Do you really want to be made aware of this?
If so, the answer is below in really small text.

Static-like noise on flash access, most noticeable during quiet passages or with low impedance phones it appears.

Just for clarity: Is this only a problem for the V1 Sansas? Are the V2 immune to this? Inquiring mind(s?) want to know.

1 - I edited you post so that you weren't showing the spoiler.
2 - This appears to only be a problem with the V1 Sansas.
