Adding songs to playlist
« on: December 12, 2008, 12:01:25 AM »
I used mediamonkey to create a playlist will all my music on it, but I deleted all the music once I backed it up so I could free up my computer and now I want to edit the playlist but it is not going so well for me.

Right now I am trying to replace mp3s with flac files.

What I did was name them all the exact same as the mp3s, put them in the same folder, and then I went to the playlist and changed all the extensions from .mp3 to .flac  but now it still plays the mp3s if both files are present and doesn't play anything if mp3s are missing.  Little help here?

This sounds like a mediamonkey problem -- or am I missing something?

...and then I went to the playlist and changed all the extensions from .mp3 to .flac...

Can you describe how you did this? What you should be doing is finding the plaintext *.m3u or *.m3u8 playlist file on your player (Normally in root or /Playlists), opening it in a text editor and doing a find and replace for .mp3 and re-saving the file.

If you do that, you should have no trouble achieving what you described.

Alternatively, you could use Rockbox's playlist functions to (re)create your playlists:

that is exactly what I did.

I went onto my ipod, went into playlists, opened the .m3u file, found the .mp3s and simply changed those to .flac and saved it

I thought that would do the trick, but even that still played the .mp3 files which I don't get?

*What I am asking is just how to edit the playlist manually (Through a computer, not through the iPod), because I am done with MM- Couldn't keep all my songs on my comp.

Open the .m3u up in Notepad - then change it there.

I did open it in notepad, and I just changed the .mp3 to .flac, that didn't work and I don't understand why, am I doing something wrong?

If your playlist now contains references to only .flac files then there's no way that playback of .mp3 files should occur.  Is it possible that you have an old copy of the playlist lying around that is confusing things (e.g. editing one then playing the other)?

can you upload your m3u somewhere?

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

No, there is no way that I have two of the same playlists.  I only have 2 playlists total and I am changing one of them... Here is what my playlist looked like before and after

Before

...
#EXTINF:573,Explosions In The Sky - First Breath After Coma
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\01 - First Breath After Coma.mp3
#EXTINF:614,Explosions In The Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\02 - The Only Moment We Were Alone.mp3
#EXTINF:523,Explosions In The Sky - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\03 - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean.mp3
#EXTINF:530,Explosions In The Sky - Memorial
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\04 - Memorial.mp3
#EXTINF:497,Explosions In The Sky - Your Hand In Mine
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\05 - Your Hand In Mine.mp3
...

After

...
#EXTINF:573,Explosions In The Sky - First Breath After Coma
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\01 - First Breath After Coma.flac
#EXTINF:614,Explosions In The Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\02 - The Only Moment We Were Alone.flac
#EXTINF:523,Explosions In The Sky - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\03 - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean.flac
#EXTINF:530,Explosions In The Sky - Memorial
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\04 - Memorial.flac
#EXTINF:497,Explosions In The Sky - Your Hand In Mine
\Ipod Music\Explosions In The Sky\Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place\05 - Your Hand In Mine.flac
...

And I have the files in the exact same folder labelled the exact same thing.  One thing I did notice however is that the mp3s have the artist name, album and track number next to the file name, the flac do not (I think iTunes did this)

i.e. There is name, artist, album, track number, genre, and rating headings in the folder and the flac files only have name filled out (I am running windows vista).

When I play the file on the ipod rockbox says the file format is .mp3, and if I delete the mp3s from the folder (Leaving only flac) then rockbox will skip to the next available song

I also just looked for the files on my ipod and they are all showing up in the file directory

Do the flac's play if you select them from the file browser?

yes they do.

I really don't get why this is so hard?  I've tried editing it on the computer and also editing it on the ipod, neither are working.

Also there is another album I added and I named it incorrectly the first time so I changed the name in the m3u file which didn't work.  Even tried removing the songs out of the playlist on the ipod and then manually putting them back in which isn't working

"One thing I did notice however is that the mp3s have the artist name, album and track number next to the file name, the flac do not (I think iTunes did this)"

What exactly does this mean? Do you mean the files on the disk have different names? (since there's no visible difference in the M3U clipping you pasted, I assume you're referring to on-disk names).

I think this is referring to the way the Windows Explorer folder view changes which columns it shows depending on the filetype.

Windows will detect an MP3 file, extract the tag info and display it in columns in the folder view. Windows (obviously  :P ) does not recognise FLAC and thus just displays filenames.

Nor do I. You need to try and make a playlist including FLAC files automatically from your player. Go back to the information I linked to in my earlier post and create a playlist, using Rockbox, of a folder on your player containing FLAC files and then have a look at that in a text editor and check for differences to what you have in your hand-edited ones.

So I thought that database was to view the playlist you are using now...

Something completely different from playlists   :D

Sorry for confusing everyone and thanks for trying to help me  :)
