What he meant was substitute X: for whatever drive letter is your Gigabeat, not literally use X:

i have 2 f-40's rockboxed.  the biggest thing tripping me up was the battery switch as mentioned above...

Ok ive followed the .sat removal directions and i got an error. it said "NO SYSTEM FOUND ON HDD". so I went into Windows Explorer to X:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG and changed FWIMG01.DAT back to FWIMG01.DAT.RBX and FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG back to FWIMG01.DAT. That seemed to get rid of the error but not the .sat files...  did i lose my original firmware somehow?- and if so is there a way to get it back?

Update - I think i might have installed the Improved Boot Time (Optional) by mistake...  can i get the old GBSYSTEM back.

second update - i have the original firmware backed up on my cpu. how do i put it back onto my gigabeat.

By the way, thanks for all the help so far. sorry for being a noob :-[

Chronon:
Copy those files to the FWIMG directory of your Gigabeat.  Do this during the renaming part of the instructions.  Make sure that the FWIMG01.DAT that ends up in the FWIMG directory on your Gigabeat is the one from the directory on your computer.

After the switching the battery part you should be able to boot the Toshiba firmware.

what exactly do you mean by the remaining part of the instructions?
after this part?-
                                        Rename the FWIMG01.DAT to FWIMG01.DAT.RBX
                                        Rename FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG to FWIMG01.DAT.
