can't install on e260R - followed wiki -help!
« on: December 10, 2008, 12:53:34 PM »
Hi all - running xp here, followed wiki (as outlined below), some differences popped up but ultimately couldn't get past bootstrap part - thanks for yiur help!

My experience:

 1.  Download e200rpatcher.exe

OK

   2. Download e200-manufac-driver.zip and extract it somewhere on your computer

Ok-  dumped it in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\e200-manufac-driver

and found these files:
e200.cat
200.inf
e200_x64.cat
libusb0.dll
libusb0.sys
libusb0_x64.dll
libusb0_x64.sys

   3. Attach your e200R to your computer in manufacturer mode (turn on the hold switch, hold select and plug in USB while continuing to hold select for about 10s)

did this, select = center of wheel right?

   4. When Windows asks for the driver, point it to the folder you extracted the driver zip file to

nothing happening - Sansa black (blue wheel lit however), no windows messages, 3 audio dings from windows when I plug in.

   5. If Windows does not ask for a driver, it means that it has installed one automatically and you must follow these steps before continuing: (For Windows XP, other versions may vary slightly)
         1. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, go to the Hardware tab, and enter Device Manager.
         2. Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Mass Storage Device (or something similar) and select Update Driver.

ok, got this far but there are 2 nodes that say "USB mass storage device, don't know which one to use

         3. Select "No, not this time", then "Install from a list or specific location", and then "Search for the best driver in these locations" and click the "Include this location in the search" box. Now use the Browse button select the location of the drivers and click OK.

my dialogue was a bit different, my choices were:

update driver
install from a specific location (advanced)
browse to above mentioned folder
searching flashlight for a moment
then window saying "cannot continue the hardware update wizard, the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware....."

STUCK here!!

   6. Run the e200rpatcher.exe file and follow the prompts. Your Sansa should have some text on the screen. If the last line says "(something) aborted" then head to the forums and look for threads relating to your problem.
   7. If it says "Firmware Unlocked, Proceed to Step 2" then it was successful and you can continue.

Hi.   After choosing "install from a specific location (advanced)" you can choose "Don't search.  I will choose the driver to install"  instead of telling Windows to "Search for the best driver in these locations"   This will force Windows to use the driver that you want.

Are you 100% sure it's really an e200R? What method have you used to identify it as such?

I had problems installing on my e260R. First the instructions are not exactly right for my XP system. This is what happened to me:
Step 3a. Before connecting the e260R I turned player off (not sure this is important at all, but instructions don't mention yes or no power up).
Step 4 did not happen so I used step 5. The wording here is not 100% correct., but I got to the point "Include this location in the search"and browsed to the correct location where I had both the unzipped driver files and the  e200rpatcher program. When saying "Next" (or something;I don't think it was "OK") the searching flashlight appeared and when it was searching and not finding anything you have to do Step 6!!! (i.e.  I double clicked on e200rpatcher.exe  via Explorer) and lo and behold: on the Sansa display it showed the promised instructions that I then followed and that was it,  at least for the Bootloader. I had problems with installing Rockbox itself too but that was again because the instructions were not detailed enough for a rookie like me. See my entry on nov 26  "no sansa found".

Well, the installation instructions for the e200R players is all on the wiki and can be updated by anyone.  However, I think before any edits are made you should be a bit more clear on exactly what needs to be changed.  Your description here is a bit vague.

Dutched - got your PM, thanks for the post.  I've abandoned the project for a couple of reasons.

1.  My Sansa Fuze 8 gig from Amazon $69 has the fixes I was looking for in rockbox:  sleep timer and better audiobook bookmarking

2.  I got another Sansa e260 not R! off ebay used for 25 bucks and installed rockbox no problem with the wizard. But..... I'm not happy with the FM radio SW and haven't had the time to look into it.  A few threads on this forum go into it.

Regards,

Chris

Seems there is a common issue with installing RB in the e260r. I too have the exact same problem. I'm running XP as well. I have confirmed that my son's e260r v1.0.2.165 is an "r" by simply looking at the mode "rhap/play4sure" in the settings of the player. The only problem with the 260r is upon powerup, the dreaded "your suscription has expired". I highly doubt this could be an issue with the installation process but I thought I would include this info just to make sure.

I followed the installation instructions slowly and carefully as outlined when I installed RB on my e280r v1.0.2.165 and I didn't have any problems. I repeated the installation procedure for my son's player and I'm stuck at the exact same location as posted by cjcrawford. Any help is greatly appreciated.
