how to use the optical output: 3.5mm jack or mini optical jack?

I just got a mini optical jack to standard optical calble and tried it on my iriver H120. To my surprise, the mini optical jack is NOT working with optical out of iRiver. However, when I use my headphone 3.5mm plug, it worked. Just wondering, is it true for you guys, too?

Have you turned on optical output? It's a dual-purpose jack, but you have to turn on optical output for that to be used (it's disabled to save battery).

Also, this wasn't an installation question, I've moved it to a better place. Please, don't post questions in the Install forum if they're not installation questions.
