The version number for what..? Rockbox's revision number can be easily found either when turning on your DAP (right on the Rockbox boot screen for around 2 or 3 seconds), or in a file in the .rockbox folder called rockbox-info.txt.

I assume he means the what hardware version his player is, since he's saying Rockbox won't work with v2. To determine that, you just check the Sandisk firmware version. If it starts with v1 you're fine, if it starts with v3 you're not.

On a c200, the Sansa firmware version is found under Settings>System Info>Version, and will be listed as something like 01.01.07P, with the initial 01 representing what is referred to here as a v1 (Rockbox).

SO, say I want to buy a Sandisk Sanza e200 but I want to make sure it is version1 before I buy it.  How can I do that when the device is still in the box?

A new, in-box e200 is almost certainly going to be a v2.

And you can't tell if it is in the box - the only sure way is the OF version number.

I hope I don't sound too stupid but I am trying to buy a sansa player that I can use with Rockbox but the decriptions don't tell what version they are. Is there anywhere I can get a player that I will be sure it will play using Rockbox? I would really appreciate some help here. By the time I find one, I'll be too old to enjoy it.

If you buy a used player then you can just ask the seller to verify the FW version for you.  I have also seen people mention froobi around here, but I have never dealt with them.
